Silver Hearts Permanent Foster Program

Silver Hearts Permanent Foster Program

Welcome to Austin Boxer Rescue’s Silver Hearts program. This program is especially for those who can provide the special care for boxers which are older and or in need of hospice care. To adopt a dog through the Silver Heart’s program you must complete either the foster or adoption application process. The adoption fee is waved for the adoption of a dog in the Silver Heart’s program. Austin Boxer Rescue will continue to pay for the Silver Heart’s medical care as long as an Austin Boxer Rescue partnered veterinarian is used.

The medical expenses covered through the Silver Heart’s program include:

  • 3 year Rabies
  • Distemper / Parvo
  • Medications for pain or comfort
  • Heartworm Prevention
  • Flea Prevention during the summer months
  • Euthanasia at the end of the dogs life
  • Final disposition of the remains per ABR policy

We invite you to consider all that Silver Heart dogs have to offer:

  • Older dogs are house trained.
  • Older dogs are not easily excitable.
  • Older dogs understand “no”.
  • Older dogs have developed personalities.
  • Older dogs sleep through the night.
  • Older dogs have lots of love to give.

These dogs are supported by your donations. Without donations from you, this program couldn't exist. Thank you.

Our Silver Heart Dogs

Meka
Meka is one of our very sad cases of neglect. She came to us as a stray from a shelter in San Antonio , and had a prolapsed uterus, was very underweight and had a very bad skin infection. Our vets were able to repair the prolapse, and have been working to clear up her skin. This petite Boxer-mix is only about 35 pounds and is very sweet, and only wants love and affection from her people. She is still recovering, but has finally found herself in a great foster home. We are happy to report that Meka is friendly,...Read More
Dahlia
Dahlia is a beautiful 4 -5 year-old brindle female who was found wandering the streets of San Antonio. She was picked up by a kind family who realized very quickly that she was pregnant. Unable to care for her, they contacted ABR. When Dahlia arrived in Austin, it was very obvious that she was going to give birth to her puppies very soon. She was in early labor, but settled into her foster home and impressed her foster mom right away with her good manners. After several days of waiting, but no puppies, we took her to our vets and...Read More
Tasha Hess
Tasha Hess is an all-around great dog. She is happy-go-lucky, sweet and affectionate. She is leash-trained, house-trained and quiet in her crate and could even be successful as an apartment dog. She is not a high energy dog, but is still very playful and would love to be in a home with a male boxer as a playmate and children of any age. She is fantastic with kids! She is attentive and knows how to sit on command. She is about 6 years old, but has no medical problems. She is even heartworm negative. Tasha Hess will fit in nicely...Read More
Pumpsie
Pumpsie is an older flashy brindle male. He is part of the Austin Boxer Rescue Silver Hearts program. He appears to have been a stray and came into rescue very skinny. He is now at a normal healthy weight and really starting to show his true dog-self. He's very loving and loves to be near his foster mom. He likes to tell her stories and wags his nubbin as he tells her about his adventures and dreams. Pumpsie does great with other dogs, he lives with a number of foster siblings and loves all of them. Pumpsie doesn’t have much interest...Read More
Horizon

More Information Coming Soon on this 4 year old female brindle that is good with other dogs.

This dog is being virtually fostered. This program involves a donation fee of $150 that allows us to rescue dogs and place in a kennel temporarily until a foster home becomes available. We prefer to put older dogs directly into foster homes as this will make them more comfortable. Since this dog is also part of our Silver Hearts Program there will be no adoption fee for this dogs. We are looking to place older dogs in loving homes so they can enjoy the...Read More

Pinkie
Pinky and I are doing great. We are 100% successful thus far with house and kennel training. She is such a quick learner. Also we are doing great on learning to stay off the couches (she stares longingly at them but manages to resist temptation). The leash training is also going really well. She walks beside me and stays on the right side. She only pulls if she sees another pet or person. She loves people, and we are working on no jumping on strangers. She just gets so excited :) She still barks a bit when I leave, but...Read More
Chili
Chili is an adorable petite boxer weighing in at 40 pounds. She is very sweet and loving and adores all the people she meets. Her favorite place to be is in your lap, and she fits perfectly. Chili loves to play and snuggle with older children, but she has not been observed around young children yet. Chili came into rescue with a large mammary tumor. Her tumor has been removed, but x-rays have revealed that the cancer has spread to her lungs. Chili is not currently showing any symptoms of her disease. She is a happy boxer who loves to...Read More
Major
Major is a dog that has it all: he is sweet with people, cats and dogs. He is as cute as he can be, and goes with the flow and would fit in just about anywhere. When Major entered rescue, he was so ill that he couldn't even stand up. He was treated for heartworm disease and developed congestive heart failure. For a while, it seemed as if this sweet guy might not make it. Today, Major has almost completely recovered from his heartworm treatment and related issues. Major is a sweet happy, low-energy boy who has a great quality...Read More
Sweet Potato
More Information Coming Soon. As part of our Silver Hearts Program there will be no adoption fee for this dog. We are looking to place older dogs in loving homes so they can enjoy the rest of their lives. Older dogs can truly be a blessing so please take the time to consider being part of the Silver heart program. You can read more about Sweet Porato and all of our other silver heart dogs on their special page.

Thank you Nicole Gustavson for virtually fostering Sweet Potato!

Princess Di
Princess Di came into rescue severely emaciated and weak. But she had a twinkle in her eye and a wag in her tail. She is starting to gain weight, energy and confidence in her foster home. Princess Di is crate-trained, house-trained and leash-trained. She likes to be your shadow and follow you everywhere you go. She loves to snuggle on the couch and "snuffle" in your ear. She wags her tail so much, I keep warning her that it might fall off! She gets along well with other dogs and loves to run up to the neighborhood children on walks....Read More
