Unknown | Basia is an 8 year old beautiful brindle Boxer. She was found wandering as a stray with a Pug in Bastrop. When rescue was contacted to intervene, we found out that she was in a late-term pregnancy. Since she was at the shelter, she ended up with a bad case of kennel cough prior to her going into labor. Basia spent 4 agonizing days unable to breathe and could not even lie down to sleep. Sadly, she spent her time sleeping standing up. Her foster parents built her "a mountain", as they called it, to allow her to sleep on an incline. Even with her mountain she could only sleep there an hour a day before she became grossly uncomfortable. Due to her being so close to labor the vets did not want her on any medications. After she gave birth it became apparent she was very ill. After taking her into the vet, she was found to have a severe case of pneumonia. Additionally, she did not have enough milk to support her 9 puppies. The vet said with her pneumonia she could not support her puppies any longer. Plus, the high doses of antibiotics could travel through the milk and hurt the puppies. As of today 4 puppies remain in relatively good heath. They are being bottle fed, but all seem to have good days and bad days. Basia is very depressed that she can not mother them. So far this lady has had a very rough time of it, but ABR and her foster parents are working hard to get Basia and her pups back to a healthy state. Check back with us for more updates on this family.
