UPDATE: We are very excited to let everyone know that Champ has not lost use of his one back leg and he is making excellent progress in his new foster home. Champ went to a new foster home just before he had to have his leg amputated. It was a difficult process leading up to the surgery, but we’re convinced that it was more than necessary. He has had his struggles but it’s as if he didn’t lose a leg at all! He runs and plays with his foster family and loves to roll over and bat his legs in excitement. The most wonderful thing about Champ is all the love he has to give. He’s the biggest lapdog you’ll ever meet. He flashes his eyes and vocalizes when he wants to crawl up on the couch with you and you’ll never regret giving in! He’s a lover and a cuddler and the cutest three-legged dog you’ll ever meet! He’s a tiny bit interested in the foster family's cat, but not in an aggressive way, just curious. The day he finds his forever home will be a bittersweet one for us.

Heartworm Status= Negative

Progress: We are very sad to say that Champ has lost use of his one good back leg. This was our greatest fear and the reason he endured so many surgeries to save his other leg. At this point, the only option we have is to place him in a wheelchair and get him into rehab. We are looking for donations to help pay for his rehab treatments which are $25 per treatment. Champ can not be defeated and he’s currently walking around on his front two legs until we can get a wheel chair for him and raise money for his rehab. Tank you all for your support and we will be posting pictures of Champ in his wheelchair once it arrives.

Progress 10/15/09: Sadly, after several surgeries to fix Champs leg and the use of a machine to stimulate bone growth Champ’s final surgery failed and he leg was removed. He is currently receiving high doses of pain meds to keep him comfortable but we anticipate that he will be up and around within the next week or so. He will be looking to snuggle into his forever home after he has time to recover. Thank you all for your kind emails, donations and support of Champ during this major ordeal in his life.

Progress September:We are very heart broken to say this, but Champ’s surgery on the broken leg has failed and he now has an external fixation on his leg. This is a last ditch effort to save this boy’s leg and if this fails he will need an amputation. Only time will tell if this surgery will work but his foster mom is very optimistic about his prognosis. It will be about 8 weeks before we know the result of this surgery. We want to thank everyone for their financial support for Champ and the wonderful supportive emails we have been getting about him. This last surgery was $400 and we are again asking for some donations to help this boy out. He still has the same happy go lucky attitude and he is very anxious to be able to run and play again. Champ gets along with all other dogs, cats and kids-he’s one of the most social dogs we have in rescue. Even with the intense pain he has experienced through his surgeries he remains happy and very affectionate to everyone.

Progress August 15: Champ is doing fantastic after his major surgeries! Thank you all for your donations and supportive emails about Champ. Although he still not cleared to walk 100% on his own he is recovering nicely from his surgeries and we anticipate he will be ready for rehab very soon. His foster mom has had experience rehabilitating dogs after major surgeries like Champ had and she is anxious to get started working with him. We are still working on collecting donations to help pay for Champ's surgery. Expect to see Champ out and about at events as early as mid August to early September.

Original Report:Champ is a sweet 4 year old male white boxer. He was outside off leash with his family one evening and wandered into the street, sadly a car was already in route and unable to stop. His family took him to the local emergency hospital but did not have enough money to pay for his treatments. It turns out that Champ had broken his femur in the left rear leg and dislocated his femur in the right rear leg. This sweet boy literally did not have a leg to stand on. Additionally he was hit in the eye and has extensive bruising from his chest all the way back to his tail. He went in for surgery and both legs for successfully repaired. Even with the high doses of pain meds he still spends most of the day sleeping. He is also having some blood in his urine and stool that the vet says will subside. He is currently be rehabilitated by his foster mom who takes him outside several times a day and holds him up to use the bathroom. Champ is expected to make a full recovery, but we are accepting donations to help pay for his treatments which are estimated to reach $2,000. We know that he has the best personality and he loves to give “kisses” to say thanks for all the love and care. Even when he first came into rescue, he was very sweet even though it was obvious he was in excruciating pain. If any boy deserves a second chance, it’s Champ-he’s a fighter. Please stay posted for more pictures of him as he progresses.
